I've read that A Nightmare on Elm Street is about to join the likes of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Friday the 13th. A remake is said to be in the works - but who will star as my favorite horror icon Freddy Krueger? Robert Englund, according to reports, will NOT be reprising the role that we all know him best for.
I've always had a special liking for Robert Englund after we saw him at Universal Studios decades ago when he was there to host the Horror Hall of Fame Awards. Growing up I watched every single Nightmare movie - multiple times. Believe it or not, my partner in all of this was my grandma! She enjoyed them as much as I did, and even took me to see one in the theater. There we were sitting side by side watching Freddy terrorize everyone -- in 3-D glasses! I'm not completely embarrassed to admit that I even had posters of Freddy on my bedroom wall and still have my 3-D glasses!
When Universal's Halloween Horror Nights has a haunted maze with Freddy in it, that's the one time I don't get scared. Instead I get super excited and once nearly jumped on him to give him a hug and tell him how awesome he is. (I also had Hannibal Lecter propose marriage to me one year, but that's a different story!)
Robert Englund doesn't play Freddy Krueger, he IS Freddy. I can't imagine watching a new Nightmare movie, hearing that song (1, 2 Freddy's coming for you ....) and then not seeing THE Freddy Krueger. Will we, the fans, end up disappointed? Will the new Freddy make it his own Freddy, or just try to imitate THE Real Freddy? I guess only time will tell.
