Las Vegas Race Predictions

It is time! I feel like I should have one final farewell blog!

This race, oh my, this race. I feel like it has major potential to be the surprise hit of the year! And I don't mean just because it is in my favorite city at night with the lights from the Strip guiding us on our journey. . . but really, doesn't that sound just perfect?!?! Instead it is because overall it seems like a disaster race right in the making. Let me explain.

Broken toes
Swollen ankle
Non-stop vertigo
ZERO training
Pneumonia
Plus other running injuries

These are just some of the stories I've heard (yeah, I put myself on the list) about the status of people running the Rock'n'Roll Las Vegas races. But we are all crazy runners, and therefore would we let this stuff stop us? Hell no! The way it would look on paper is that this is going to be a race full of disappointment, pain, agony and defeat.

I don't think so. Perhaps I'm always trying to find the positives in life, but come on, with all of these negative things going on, any success is going to feel huge! I think after this weekend there are going to be race reports of people overcoming adversity. I think a girl that has never done a road race in her life is going to cross that finish line and be confused about why she is really tired, yet filled with adrenaline and smiling so much. I think a girl that hasn't been able to train, but has been dreaming about this race for a year and a half is going to surprise herself when she runs in a straight line, finishes that race and still wants to go grab herself some celebratory rum. I think the crazy marathoner with the broken toes is going to finish his 26.2 miles before I finish my 13.1. In true form, I think our swollen ankle girl is going to finish this race in style just like she always does ... I mean you don't get in Runner's World just by being average, right? You push and push and you finish it - she will!

So here I am, 24 hours away from beginning our initial descent into the Las Vegas area, and I am feeling REALLY excited! Not just about the whole vacation aspect, but about the race. I've set myself up with this huge challenge and I am really excited about seeing what I can do. I don't predict a PR, but I also don't expect a PW either. I predict oodles of fun! This weekend will give me a chance to prove to myself that my mental strength IS tough if I just block out the bad and focus on what I know I CAN do!

And then there is all the other stuff!! Margaritaville, Titanic, the expo, FreeZone and the Queens of Las Vegas, Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil, bloggers, fellow runners, priceless people watching -- imagine mixing runners with the rodeo people with the regular tourists and the guys with the prostitute cards everywhere? This is going to be a hoot!! And fine, I'll say it - Yeah, I am totally drinking before the race*. Tomorrow night I'll be dancing my ass off, screaming for my boys, sticking dollars in their dresses, maybe taking some shots ... I mean come in, it's VEGAS!!!

*Disclaimer: If you see me at the expo and I appear to be drunk because of the slurring and unsteady walking - nah, I'm actually 100% sober - welcome to Meniere's with R0nda!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!!!! Let's kick this race's drunk ass!
