Again, the Side Effects

May 5, 2015  Cinco de Mayo, a day when most people are thinking of having tequila and Mexican food and partying even though none of us now what is being celebrated. Yeah, today I am not one of those. Last year I was preparing churro cookies, burritos, rice and an awesome playlist to help me entertain my family at dinner by the pool. This year I am so happy to be home in my chair relaxing. It took a few days, but hello Lupron!

I had to pull out my IVF folder (huge folder with tabs and a zipper!) to read over my medication pages. I was just feeling off. I didn't know if it was just me or what. Well, here's a look at the side effects of my current medication!  (Those items in bold I am or have experienced since being on Lupron)

  • Hot flashes
  • Sweating
  • Clamminess
  • Headaches
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Breast tenderness or change in breast size
  • Vaginal discharge, dryness or itching
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Inflammation of the vagina
  • Decrease in sexual ability or desire
  • Swelling or tingling of the hands, feet or lower legs
  • Pain, burning, bruising or itching at place where injection was given
  • Change in weight
  • Generalized pain
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stomach discomfort or pain
  • Mood changes like irritability or depression
  • Difficult with memory
  • Acne

Clearly that's a lot of possible side effects. I'm crossing my fingers I don't experience them all. I'm still terrified of "inflammation of the vagina". I see images of a baboon butt! I probably could make decrease in sexual desire bold --- but at this point nothing has changed. Just try feeling frisky while going through In Vitro Fertilization. I don't see how that is even possible! I've been close to vomiting, but dry heaving isn't on the list, so that isn't bold either. This should make my remaining two upcoming races a rather interesting experience!

So I guess I feel a little better knowing that I'm not insane or making stuff up. All these weird things going on - yeah, I'm willingly and happily injecting that into myself every night. And according to the actual medication bottle, it appears I am taking double the standard dosage for these first couple of weeks. Yay, go me! They always say that IVF is hard on women ..... I will now have to give in and agree. It's been an exciting, fascinating process, that's for sure. But the longer it goes on and the more drugs I put in, the harder it gets - both physically and mentally. The outcome will be worth it!
